When you hear the lyrics, “you’re just too good to be true...can’t take my eyes off of you...,” who else immediately thinks of the scene from “Ten Things I Hate About You” where Heath Ledger serenades Julia Stiles over the PA system during soccer practice? 🙋♀️
While his intentions may not have been completely honorable, you have to admit that is a great scene. Wouldn’t a similar idea make an amazing proposal?! Please someone hire me to help choreograph a remake of this scene! 🙏🙏🙏
But I digress.
The reason we are talking about this song today is to review it from a first dance perspective. So without further ado...
The Pros
There are so many pros to this song from the lyrics, “I love you baby, and if it’s quite alright, I need you baby, to warm the lonely nights,” to the fun and exciting musical structure that starts slow and builds to a lively crescendo during the chorus. As I listen to the song, I notice three distinct parts — the verse, the musical bridge, and the chorus — which translate well into different movements and styles of dance that can be easily incorporated into an exciting choreographed first dance.
The Cons
On the flip side, that interesting song structure can easily trip couples up if they don’t have a strong background in partner dancing. For novices, it can be difficult to hear the timing and know exactly how to move during each part of the song. When couples choose this song, they often tell me they are taking dance lessons because they didn’t know how to dance to it! If that’s you, maybe you need to consider taking private dance lessons or complete my online course in order to make the most of your first dance to this awesome song.
The Recommendation
I wholeheartedly recommend this song for a first dance because the pros outweigh the cons by a long shot. It’s familiar without being overplayed, the parents and grandparents love it, and it’s got all you can ask for from a first dance song—romance, excitement and fun—all in one three minute song.
The Lyrics
You're just too good to be true
I can't take my eyes off you
You'd be like heaven to
I wanna hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off you
Pardon the way that I stare
There's nothing else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak
But if you feel like I feel
Please let me know that is real
You're just too good to be true
I can't take my eyes off you
I love you baby
And if it's quite all right
I need you baby
To warm the lonely nights
I love you baby
Trust in me when I say
Oh pretty baby
Don't bring me down I pray
Oh pretty baby
Now that I've found you stay
And let me love you, baby
Let me love you
